Photography Goes Traveling - Part 3 of Rollin's Photography Series

Presented by Greater Stonegate Village

With the invention of the wet plate Collodion photography process, which replaced the Daguerreotype in the 1850s, along with the albumen print process, photography began to go traveling. Spurred by this new technology, photographers began to travel to remote areas and distant lands to bring back images that were eagerly embraced by the public.

This became “armchair travel for the masses." A newly mobile public using steamships, canals, and railroads wanted pictures of theses areas that had previously been hidden. Photographers who brought back images form these lands quickly found a marketplace in galleries, stores, and museums.

In this presentation, we will look at the technology behind this movement and some of the photographers who went “on the road”, with emphasis on the American West and the colorful individuals who brought back these astonishing images.
