The Daguerreotype and Early American Portraits - Part 2 of Rollin Fraser’s Photography Series

Join Greater Stonegate Village on Wednesday for an informative and educational experience.

In 1839 Louis Daguerre announced his new invention to the French Academy of Sciences, the Daguerreotype. This created a sensation in the public imagination. Daguerreotype mania took over the French public with crowds in the streets eager to see examples of “these pictures, painted by no mortal hand”. As the news of this new technology spread, it was embraced everywhere, and no more so than in America.

In this presentation we will look at the effect the Daguerreotype had on the American character and how it was embraced by Americans, of all classes, and how portraits of the elites and everyday citizens helped us, a new political entity, define our nation. This will expand on and continue our presentation from November 8, however, it will be able to be enjoyed without viewing the previous program.
