WAVE Mutual Support Session: Low-Fee and No-Fee Villages -- Thriving on Small Budgets
About this event
If you have worked within the village movement for a few years, you are aware that there is no one size fits all structure. Most have pursued a membership model, charging dues that, in some instances, can reach several hundred dollars annually per member, with multiple member types and payment levels. But there is also a cadre of smaller budget villages that serve their communities effectively while charging no or low ($50 or less annually) dues. Their message to their neighbors is that all are welcome to participate in programs and services at no (or a very low) cost. These villages also find they have fewer and simpler administrative burdens.
What led these villages to taking this approach? How do they continue to deliver on their purpose and sustain themselves without the dependable revenue stream that substantial membership dues can offer? What are the unique attributes of these villages that enables them to persevere and fulfill their goals and objectives? What successes and challenges can they point to? What alternative revenue sources have they identified? What technology, efficiencies and collaborations have they identified to limit their expenses? How much does budget size matter and is bigger necessarily better?
These and other questions will be discussed in this new WAVE Mutual Support Zoom Session. Three leaders from no or low-dues villages will share their experiences and facilitate the group discussion. They include Joe Isaacs of Mill Creek Village, Abby Simms of North Chevy Chase Connections, and George Smith of Wyngate & Maplewood Neighbors Helping Neighbors. If participants find this inaugural zoom session valuable, WAVE will consider hosting more sessions to allow no- and low-fee villages to continue to share insights and learn from each other.
