The American Constitutional System at Risk: Can Our Democracy Die?<br />Tuesday, December 6<br />2:00-3:00 pm via Zoom<br /><br />Our speaker is Michael L. Mezey, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at DePaul University in Chicago, and author of five books. Michael is a resident of Friendship Heights. He will discuss the reasons why our current political environment, characterized by extreme partisan polarization, election denialism, and the ongoing culture wars, call into question the stability of the American constitutional system.<br /><br /> <br /><br />This is an FHNN event open to everyone. Below is additional information about our speaker.<br /><br /> <br /><br />Michael L. Mezey is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at DePaul University in Chicago. He earned his B.A. from the College of the City of New York and his M.A. and Ph.D. at Syracuse University. He served on the faculties of the University of Virginia and the University of Hawaii before joining DePaul University's faculty in 1977 as chair of the Political Science Department. From 1993 thru 2005, Dr. Mezey served as Dean of DePaul’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He is the author of five books: Comparative Legislatures (Duke University Press, 1979), Congress, the President, and Public Policy (Westview Press, 1989), Representative Democracy: Legislators and their Constituents (Rowman and Littlefield, 2008), Presidentialism: Power in Comparative Perspective (Lynne Rienner, 2013), and (S)electing the President: The Perils of Democracy (Routledge, 2018). He is a co-editor of Parliaments and Public Policy, (Cambridge University Press, 1991), Distributive Politics in Developing Countries: Almost Pork, (Lexington Books, 2014), and Legislative Decline in the 21st Century: A Comparative Perspective.
