GSV Presents: Iconic Photographs of the 1970s

About this event

In the history of photography, the years from about 1930 to the late 1970s can be
considered as the Golden Age of photojournalism, before the internet and social
media saturated our lives with images 24 hours a day. During these years,
America’s view of the country and the world was shaped by the still image found in
general interest magazines such as Life and Look and on the front pages of the
daily newspaper. The printed photograph was how we viewed the world.
This presentation will explore the impact of the iconic images most of us know so
well-from Elvis meeting the President at the White House to a family welcoming
home a captured American soldier returning from Vietnam, as well as many others
that helped define the decade of bad hair, dreadful clothes, gas shortages, and
disco. We will look at the images from this period, the stories behind them, and
learn about the photographers that created them.
