Drawing the Map of Your Life

One of the most important and satisfying tasks of elderhood is telling the story of how you came to be the unique person you are. A fun and creative way of telling this story is by drawing your life’s journey as a map. Maps use images to symbolize where we’ve been, what’s impacted us, what we’ve learned, and how we’ve changed. Peaks of accomplishment and swamps of despair, crossroads of big decisions and shores of new beginnings – images are truly worth 1000 words!

David Oldfield will share stories and illustrations from his recent book, An Atlas of Aging, which features the life maps of 20 older adults from around the world.

David Oldfield is founder and director of Farther On, a movement dedicated to reframing the later years of life as an adventure to be lived rather than a problem to be solved (www.fartheron.org). David has spent the last 35 years designing transformational experiences and toolboxes to help people through threshold times in the lifecycle--adolescence, midlife, retirement, and the final threshold of our deaths.

David’s guidebooks and programs address these profound transitions and have been used around the world.  Additionally, he is devoted to helping corporations and
organizations through their own threshold moments of growth and renewal.  His work is grounded in the timeless wisdom of world mythology.
