Happy October everyone,

Last month’s Village Gathering was a great success! 117 participates attended six work sessions. The sessions’ summaries, handouts and PowerPoints will be available on the website shortly.

The month of October is also filled with lots of interesting events and meetings. The first four are village specific events, so please pay extra attention to them and think carefully about: Who else should know about them?

 

1. Rockville Villages: Ready, Start, Grow! Sat., October 8th 10 am -12 noon.

Rockville Villages Advisory Committee is hosting a panel of leaders from three different villages (Kentlands, Wyngate and Little Falls). The panel will discuss the work they did to start their villages. The event is free and open to all. Click this link below to see the flyer and please feel free to share widely. 2. Montgomery County Villages Capacity Building, October 25th, 1-3pm

The power of numbers! Come and learn about what is on other villages’ minds as we begin to envision what we can accomplish together: negotiate discounts, receive large grants, help develop capacities, bulk purchases… The sky is the limit! If you are interested in this big idea, please join us on Tuesday, October 25 1-3pm at Bethesda Chevy Chase Regional Services Center (4805 Edgemoor Lane, Bethesda, MD 20814.)

 

3. Suburban Hospital’s Village Ambassador Kick Off Event, October 28th, 11-2 pm

Suburban Hospital is excited to work with villages to improve their members’ quality of life. They plan to develop both a training programs well as special relationships with villages around their members’ discharge care. 4. Maryland Communities of Practice, October 27th, 9am-Noon

Carol Cober and Maureen Cavaiola organize semi-annual meetings for all Maryland villages. Every meeting focuses on one topic of interest and they are highly interactive. This time the meeting will focus on creative problem solving. The location is 2664 Riva Rd. Annapolis. Contact me for more details.

 

5. Senior Forum, October 21st, 1-4pm

Council members Berliner and Katz are co-sponsoring a Senior Forum October 21, 2016, 1-4pm at The Village at Rockville (9701 Veirs Dr (not rd.), Rockville, MD 20850.) We will have a table for villages, and anyone is welcome to join, drop off brochures and answer peoples' questions about villages. Let your members know about this event and send a reply! 6. The Montgomery County's Dementia Friendly America Initiative (MoCo DFAi) Action Team is seeking Village representation.

The ideal candidates will have:
· Big picture understanding of MoCo’s Aging in Place Villages
· Interested in being a liaison between the county’s Dementia Friendly American Initiative and all county villages.
· Is comfortable gathering information (pertinent to caregiving and dementia care) from all county villages and reporting back during  Action Team bi-monthly meetings
· Reporting back to county villages about the MoCo DFAi.

7.SHIP program updates
SHIP has a new phone number and location: 301 255 4250. The State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) has a new location, new phone number but is still continuing to provide the same outstanding service to people with Medicare, family members, caregivers and new Medicare enrollees. SHIP's services are Free to Montgomery County residents. MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT PERIOD  October 15 - December 7. 8. 50+ Vital Living through Meaningful Volunteering...and more! Tuesday, October 18

Looking to give back? Come to this life enhancing event at the Bethesda Library, 7400 Arlington Road Bethesda MD, 20814 from 1pm - 2pm (with Q&A to follow) on Tuesday, October 18. Learn about Montgomery County Volunteer Center's rich resources for pairing you with the perfect volunteer opportunity, learn how to get involved on a non-profit board, and more.  Plus, you can also get your NEW copy of the Vital Living Networker Free. 9. Leadership Montgomery Senior Health and Wellness Expo Nov 1st, 1-3pm

Leadership Montgomery is hosting a wellness Expo at Holiday Park. The event is free for members and $20 for non-members.

10.  n4a’s volunteer campaign

The centerpiece of the campaign is a consumer brochure: Doing Good is Good for You: Volunteer!, that provides older adults with information about the health benefits of volunteering, as well as a handy checklist to help them match their interests with available opportunities. There is a great brochure that you can view online. If you like it, please let me know so that I can bulk order it for you.
